Dental Implant Procedure

During your first visit, Dr. Ahn will take 3D scans of your mouth and design your custom treatment plan. We will explain your restoration options and help you choose the right type of anesthesia for your comfort.

On the day of your procedure, we will administer the anesthesia and wait for it to take effect. Dr. Ahn will make an incision in the gum tissue and insert the implant post. Sometimes, the abutment is attached to the implant at this time. If not, you will return for a second procedure to uncover the implant and attach the abutment. We may attach a temporary crown to wear while the implant heals. After the healing process, which can take several months, your dentist will place your final crown.

Types of Anesthesia

We offer several options for anesthesia and sedation.

Cost of Dental Implants—Medicare, Dental Insurance, Financing, and More

Medicare and medical insurances generally do not cover dental implants unless the procedure is considered medically necessary, and they are very strict about how they define a medically necessary procedure. If you experienced tooth loss due to trauma, tumor removal, or certain medical conditions, Medicare or your medical insurance carrier might cover your dental implants.

Although Medicare and medical insurances do not cover the dental implants, there are additional diagnostic and surgical procedures that they may cover. These include consultation fees, 3D scans, surgical guides, bone grafting, or tooth extraction.

We are one of the few oral and maxillofacial surgery practices in the Orange County area that work with Medicare. If you do not have Medicaid or insurance coverage, we also work with healthcare financing companies to create an affordable monthly payment plan. Denture Replacement With Dental Implants

The All-on-4® treatment concept is an excellent solution for patients who wear dentures, but who desire a healthier and more secure option for tooth replacement. Traditional dentures often cause discomfort and oral sores when not professionally fitted. Although cheaper upfront, dentures must be replaced every few years, which can become expensive over time.

Dental implants are an investment in your smile. Several implant posts can support a fixed denture, providing you with a natural-looking arch of teeth. The implant posts prevent jaw bone loss, which preserves your facial structure and benefits your oral health. If you wear dentures and are ready for a better tooth replacement solution, contact our office to learn about denture replacement in Aliso Viejo, CA.

Types of Dental Implants

There are several types of dental implant treatments available and during your first visit, Dr. Ahn will determine the right treatment for your needs.

  • Single Tooth Replacement. One implant can replace a missing or failing tooth anywhere in the mouth. Dental implants are strong and can replace front teeth, canine teeth, and even molars.
  • Multiple Tooth Replacement. An implant-supported bridge can restore multiple teeth next to each other, or we can place multiple throughout the mouth.
  • Immediate Implants. If you are having a tooth extracted and have sufficient jaw bone to support an implant, we may be able to insert your replacement tooth immediately following extraction.
  • Full-Arch Restoration. Using as few as four implants, we can attach a fixed denture that looks and functions just like a natural arch of teeth.

"Hi, my name's Georgia. I’m from San Clemente, and I came to see Dr. Ahn for dental implants. I cracked a couple of teeth, and they needed quite a bit of work to get them back into shape again. Having never had something like that before, I was very nervous about coming in, but it ended up being a great experience all the way around. Seeing Dr. Ahn for the first time, he’s very quiet, easygoing, calm, made me feel completely relaxed from the moment I came into the office. He was very good at explaining things when things needed to be explained. It made me feel very confident that he knew what he was doing and that everything that was getting done was going to be done right. He just made me feel comfortable from the beginning to the end. It took a while to get to the point where I have the implants and the crowns on, but I love it. I feel like I have perfect teeth again, and it’s totally worth the time to come in and have it all done, so I’m very happy with it. I would say, if you live around this area, anywhere from Lake Forest, Laguna Hills, Mission Viejo, even as far south as I am in San Clemente, I would highly recommend that you come to this office for any work like implants. It would be totally worth the drive, even if it’s further than that. This would be an awesome office to come see."

"My name is Joan, and I came to see Dr. Ahn for a dental implant. I was referred to Dr. Ahn from my dentist, Dr. Riggs. I was sort of nervous at first, but that all went away after seeing the staff. They were just great! I just relaxed, and it went on from there – it was great! I knew I was in good hands with Dr. Ahn. No problems when I left, and I had no pain after I left. It went very smoothly. I’ve lived here in Mission Viejo and Laguna Niguel for years, and I would recommend him to any of my friends in San Clemente, Mission Viejo, Laguna Niguel, Laguna Hills - anywhere around here - and Temecula!"

"My name is Tom. I came in to see Dr. Ahn for an implant to save three teeth, and they’ve been very well since I've had them done. He came highly recommended, and being a specialist, I took trust in being referred, and his office has turned out to be that way. I have referred people here. The staff here I find very nice, easy to get along with, and very informative when I ask questions or if I need answers for medical insurance. I would recommend Dr. Ahn and this office to many of my friends that live in Aliso Viejo, Laguna Beach, Laguna Hills, and also up in Anaheim where I have family."

Frequently Asked Questions

What are “bargain” dental implants?

You may see advertisements for “bargain” dental implant treatments. While cost is an issue for most people, it should never be the primary consideration. Remember that a dental implant is a surgically placed medical device that is implanted in your body. Many low-cost clinics place dental implants that cost significantly less and have no long-term research or clinical studies behind them.

Although the costs of the well-researched implant systems are higher, we only use these high-grade systems to ensure our patients receive optimal outcomes. At OC Oral Surgery, we stand behind all our treatment options and will be clear and honest regarding your treatment recommendation and fees.

Can dental implants be done in a day?

If you need a tooth extracted, we may be able to place a dental implant immediately following extraction. These are called immediate or same-day dental implants and eliminate the need to have a separate procedure for implant placement, saving you time and money. Any periodontal disease must be treated before you can receive an implant, as healthy gums are essential to successful implant placement.

Do dental implants hurt?

The procedure to place dental implants does not hurt because we use anesthesia. There are many options, including local and general anesthesia, laughing gas, and IV sedation. After surgery, some swelling can be expected, but this will subside quickly. Once healed, your implant will feel like a natural tooth and will not cause pain.

How many teeth can one implant support?

One implant post can typically support three replacement teeth, known as an implant-supported bridge. For full-arch restoration, we will use multiple implants to support a full arch of replacement teeth.
