You may be wondering why an oral and maxillofacial is the best option for your wisdom teeth removal, dental extraction, dental implants, or oral pathologies and trauma. Oral surgeons receive extensive, specialized training beyond dental school, which is why many dentists refer their patients to oral surgeons for more advanced surgical procedures.
Here at OC Oral Surgery, we want you to feel assured that you are receiving the best treatment available. Below is some additional information about the oral surgeon training and education process and how we continue our education to provide you with the best possible care.
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons have highly specialized training, and the educational process is both very rigorous and extensive. To become an oral surgeon, one has to first complete four years of college and then four years of dental school. The candidate then must apply to an accredited oral and maxillofacial surgery residency program. These programs are highly competitive and require the applicants to be in the top of the graduating dental school class.
There are two types of oral and maxillofacial residency programs. The four-year residency without medical school and the six-year residency with medical school. In both types of program, the scope of training is very broad and includes jaw reconstructive surgery, oral pathology and cancer surgery, facial trauma, dental extractions, wisdom teeth removal, bone grafting, dental implants, and general anesthesia.
The longer and more extensive six-year pathway includes the completion of medical school and a one-year internship in general surgery. In this type of program, the candidate becomes a fully licensed dentist and physician with extensive training in dentistry, surgery, anesthesia and medicine.
After completion of the residency programs, oral surgeons continue their education by studying the latest advancements in the field during their private practice career.
Due to the highly specialized training of oral surgeons, they are the experts in wisdom teeth removal, dental extractions, dental implants, jaw surgery and anesthesia.
